Meet Dorian

5 years old · Full of energy and discovering new ways to communicate

Dorian at Pasitos de Luz

This is the story of Dorian, a boy full of energy who, at 5 years old, keeps discovering new ways to communicate, learn, and take part in everything happening around him. He arrived at Pasitos de Luz at 3 years old, and since then, every small step has become an important milestone on his path toward greater autonomy and independence.

Dorian has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect communication, social interaction, and the way a person perceives and responds to their surroundings. Every child with autism has different traits and needs, which is why individualized support is essential to their development.

When He Arrived

  • He wore diapers
  • He communicated mainly by screaming
  • He accepted very few foods
  • It was hard for him to join classroom activities

Today

  • He’s out of diapers
  • He tries a much wider variety of foods
  • He follows instructions and takes part in class
  • His first words are starting to emerge

Small Goals, Big Achievements

Dorian during an activity

When Dorian arrived, he faced significant challenges with communication, eating, and adjusting to daily routines.

Recognizing his potential and his need for closer support, one of our teachers chose him as her “niño reto” (challenge child), an initiative in which a teacher gives a child special attention and together they set small goals to build his autonomy and independence.

Together, they began a journey of small but meaningful goals. The first was leaving diapers behind; next came accepting new foods. With patience, consistency, and lots of love, Dorian stopped using diapers and greatly expanded the variety of foods he’s willing to try.

Today, he follows instructions, takes an active part in class, and feels brave enough to try activities he once avoided completely. He interacts more confidently with the people around him and has made important progress in his communication.

Where there were once screams, words are now beginning to emerge.
