Meet Nicole

6 years old · Cheerful, curious, and more confident every day

Nicole during physical therapy

This is the story of Nicole, a cheerful, curious girl who loves playing, spending time with other children, and exploring the world around her. Her smile and enthusiasm brighten every space she shares with others. The road that brought her here has been full of challenges, perseverance, and important lessons.

Nicole has psychomotor developmental delay and hemiparesis, conditions that affect movement, coordination, and body control. For her, this has meant significant challenges with balance, using one of her hands, and moving around independently.

When She Started

  • It was hard for her to sit steadily
  • She had difficulty using one of her hands
  • She got around mostly by sitting or scooting on the floor
  • She resisted taking part in therapy sessions

Today

  • She pulls herself up to stand by holding the bars
  • Her language keeps developing
  • She spends more time with other children
  • She enjoys therapy and asks to go

Confidence Comes First

Nicole at Pasitos de Luz

When Nicole began therapy, she faced significant challenges that limited her mobility and her participation in everyday activities. But for her therapists, the first challenge wasn’t only about strengthening her body. Before celebrating any physical progress, they needed to build something essential: her confidence.

At first, Nicole resisted many activities. She didn’t want anyone to hold her hand, avoided walking, and struggled to take part in sessions. It was also hard for her to accept help with some daily activities.

Little by little, she began to feel safe and more open to participating. Eating, drinking water, and doing her exercises became a more natural part of her routine.

Today, her therapists see a girl who is much more confident and motivated. She enjoys therapy, shows a growing desire to walk, and wants to do more and more on her own. She has also made progress in her communication: first she found new ways to express what she thinks, feels, and needs, and over time her language began to develop.

For a long time, Nicole got around by sitting or scooting on the floor. Today she can hold onto the bars and pull herself up to stand on her own.

Nicole still has new goals to reach, but every day she shows more confidence and determination.

The girl who once resisted taking part now asks to go to therapy. The one who once preferred to stay on the sidelines now wants to be part of everything happening around her.
