Joshua lives in San Vicente, the little town closest to Casa Connor. He is originally from Manzanillo, Colima, a port city about 8 hours drive south of Puerto Vallarta. Joshua started at Pasitos de Luz when he was 5 years old. He is now 7.

Diagnosis

When he was 6 months old, Joshua’s mum noticed that her son was having trouble moving his head and controlling his left arm and left leg. They took him for tests and the doctor diagnosed him as having left-sided Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy. This means that Joshua has weakness and paralysis on just his left side. Initially, Joshua attended a mainstream primary school but, because of his disability, he was bullied and found life very difficult. His parents found out about Pasitos de Luz from a family friend and decided to bring him here.

Therapies

We have been working with Joshua to increase both his muscle tone and his muscle strength, on both sides of his body. He has been using our treadmill and has also been working with light weights. Joshua is particularly reluctant to use his left hand. We have introduced exercises that encourage him to use his less favoured hand, holding, grabbing and manipulating objects. His muscle strength and tone have really improved, and he has a much greater range of motion on his left side. The next step is for Joshua to master the fine and gross motor skills in his left hand.

In the classroom, Joshua has been learning to read, write, add, subtract and do other basic mathematical exercises. He has particularly excelled under the tutelage of Martha, one of our most experienced teachers, who has managed to bring him out of his shell. Joshua now has close friends at Pasitos de Luz and is a happy little boy.

Family life

Joshua has a little sister and lives in San Vicente with his mum and dad.
